This is a man’s world but women are redefining it in STEM and construction

“This is a man’s world, but it wouldn’t be nothing without a woman or a girl.” These words, immortalised by James Brown decades ago, resonate deeply in industries like STEM and construction, where men have traditionally laid the foundations. Yet, as the song reminds us, it is women who bring depth, creativity and untapped potential to such world dominated by men. In 2025, the urgency to balance the scales has never been clearer.

Today, women make up just 29.4% of STEM roles in the UK, a statistic that speaks to the challenges that remain. The Review of Female Entrepreneurship, commissioned by the UK government, estimates that fully realising women’s potential in these sectors could add an astonishing £250 billion to the economy. This isn’t about rewriting history but building a future where everyone’s contributions are valued equally.

Green shoots of change

“You see, man made the electric light… to take us out of the dark.”

Progress is shining through, illuminating the path forward. In 2024, the number of young women applying for computing degrees in the UK increased by 10%. It’s a hopeful trend, but women remain underrepresented across most STEM disciplines. These contrasting realities underscore the importance of nurturing environments that not only welcome women into these industries but also empower them to thrive and lead.

A celebration of visionaries

“Man made the car to take us over the road, but it’s women who are steering it toward progress.”

On 7 March 2025, just ahead of International Women’s Day, Baroness Sandy Verma and Jomas Associates will host a transformative event celebrating women breaking barriers in STEM and construction. This campaign is creating ripples of change. The event will spotlight female business owners who have shattered glass ceilings, inspiring the next generation to push boundaries and expand their horizons. It’s a day to honour the women who defy the odds and rewrite the narrative of male-dominated fields.

More importantly, it’s about creating connections. Mentorship and collaboration between seasoned leaders and emerging talent will form the foundation of lasting progress. These women are making history by paving the road for those who follow.

Women in STEM

The power of role models

“But it wouldn’t be nothing… nothing without a woman or a girl.”

For decades, the image of a scientist, engineer or builder has been overwhelmingly male. When young women don’t see themselves reflected in these industries, it becomes harder to imagine belonging.

This event seeks to rewrite that script. By showcasing women who are thriving as innovators and changemakers, it offers tangible proof that success in STEM and construction is not limited by gender. Role models don’t just inspire; they validate ambitions and demonstrate that the barriers society has built can be dismantled.

Strength in unity

“This is a man’s world… but it’s a better one when we’re in it together.”

Real progress happens when women and men come together, united in their commitment to equality. Men are vital allies in this movement, partners who can challenge outdated norms and help break down barriers.

This is about fostering environments where everyone, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to innovate, lead and thrive. Together, we can build industries that are more inclusive, creative, and sustainable.
